First official #yegtweetup Meetup
Yesterday
evening, i 'dragged' Hubbie out with me to Original Joes - Varsity
(8404 109th Street) for his first official #yegtweetup.Keep
in mind, he isn't into Twitter and Facebook. He isn't into social
networking ever. He isn't a gadget guy either. However....he does have
a laptop so he can play his games while he during his 4 weeks stint in
camp and chat with me online. Plus, he isn't into the whole mingling
around in a party when he doesn't know anyone but me kinda guy. Yeah,
we are complete opposites but he went because he knows i love to
socialise.I've
already met a few of my fellow tweetples before but i was excited that
i was going to meet more of these nice people that i've been tweeting
with back and forth with the last couple
of months. One in particular was Hilary (@hilarydarrah), she was so
much fun and definitely a lil more outgoing than she lets on from her
twitter persona. Another tweetple i got to chat with for a bit was Roma
(@achromatica) who together with Hilary made for good candidates for
candid photos throughout the nite. Also, Hilary 'hackled' the resident magician at Original Joes. *grin* Tsk tsk.
He was too scared to come near our table after he did a few tricks which i thought were really neat!
Of course, one of the many items that are pulled out in these tweetup events is the trusty cell phones. Well, when everyone does that i get pretty self conscious cos everyone seem to be carrying an iPhone or Blackberry while i only have a measly LG Neon. (Yeah yeah i got sucked into the Rogers commercial. Bleh.) To my surprise, Jerry (@Zoomjer) whipped up his Macbook when i was whining (again) about not having
a Blackberry or iPhone so i could read tweets and tweet easily.I have
set up my mobile to receive tweet updates through SMS (text msgs) and
trust me it isn't the same as being able to scroll through all the
updates on a screen. It's kinda pain in the butt but it will do for now
till i can afford to go on a data plan. (Hate have been unemployed for the last 9 mths cos of immigration delays.)Some of the tweetples that were sitting to my right. Am sorry guys, too many tweet name to remember.
As the
evening's event progressed, i kept singing this song in my head : - "I
will follow him" Why? Cos the line of the nite was "I follow you!".
*grin*
I'll quote Hubbie from a non-'twitterer' perspective, this was how it was like for him :
"Do
you follow me?" was the question on everyone's lips that night. It
seemed that the common way of introducing yourself would be, "hi, I'm
ScreamingMuskrat12 also known as Jim...do you follow me?". To which the
response would be "hi, I'm SmootheringMama145 also known as Carol..this
is my husband BadgeredMale239 also known as Bruce...oh yeah, I have
read your tweets...do you follow us?" After a bit of hearing that my
mind kicked in and I had a thought. It seems that in twitter world it
is called 'following', in the real world it would have been called
'stalking'. Guess each world has their own definitions huh?The
turn
out for the tweetup was a lil overwhelming but so much fun. There were
times where i was mingling around and i would be standing with a group
of tweetples and feel oh so small. *lol* I'm only 5'1" so i really felt
as if everyone was towering over me.
*heehee* But i definitely had loads of fun, loads of laughs and new friends to boot!

Bill (@wburris) and Kathleen (@GuitarKat). Great job organising this tweetup, Kathleen! Had so much fun!
Update : Kathleen shared with me this post that a journalist from San Fransisco about Edmonton's Twitter Community. A clip of the tweetup that Jerry uploaded onto youtube.com was mentioned in the post too!
